Le Petit Belge

Do you love waffles? Do you want to blown away by how good a waffle can be? Look no further. Le Petit Belge is one of those places that you go into with no expectations and find yourself coming out shocked and still talking about it weeks later.

The Price: $$

The Setting: All you really need

If we're being honest, the setting is nothing special. It's not the most beautiful restaurant you'll ever eat in. And it is also not a table service restaurant. The menus are on the wall as you walk in and line up to order at the front. But it has tables, chairs and lights. Seriously, when you're still wiping the crusties out of your eyes at 8 in the morning and all you want is a good breakfast, what more do you really need? It also has a great balance of "hey I just want a quick in and out breakfast" or "hey, I'm going to take this morning slow and chill for a while".

The Menu: Waffle forward

The main attraction at Le Petit Belge is the Belgian waffles. There is a variety of waffle options that focus on the fruitier and sweeter side of things. The second attraction is their eggs bennies. What sets their bennies apart is the option to have waffles as the English muffin. You can also have them served on the traditional English muffin or a bagel (get the waffle option). They also offer breakfast classics such as breakfast bowls, huevos rancheros, breakfast bagels and a traditional breakfast.

What We Ate: Blueberry Brie Waffle 🤤 & Breakfast Bowl

As soon as I saw Amanda take her first bite of the waffle, a look of complete shock flood her face and the words "oh my god" leave her mouth, I knew I fucked up. I should've got the waffles... Amanda is shocked by food all the time, but it takes a lot for her to give the kind of reaction she did to this waffle. I had to have a bite. And so I did... and I immediately understood the reaction. The waffles at Le Petit Belge are freaking god level. They are so perfectly crisp, but fluffy on the inside. Memorable is the word to describe them. You will not forget them. Trust us. Get them. Now.

But don't sleep on the breakfast bowl! Me being more of a savory guy, I opted for an option other than the waffles (which seems like a sin at a Belgian waffle restaurant 🤷‍♂️ and also, why the hell did I not get a benny on a waffle...idiot), but I was not disappointed. The bowl was delicious. If you like meat and aren't afraid of your heart skipping a beat mid breakfast, Le Petit Belge jams your breakfast bowl (skillet) full of bacon, pork sausage and double smoked ham. The homemade hollandaise is another delicious piece to this breakfast puzzle. They serve it with an any style egg, cheddar cheese, on top of oven baked potatoes and topped with arugula.

What We Drank: Americanos

Just some good ol' hot Americanos. A fantastic pairing for any item on the menu.

The Service: Prompt and warm

They do not mess around when it comes to getting you your food. Like I said earlier, you line up at the front, order and sit down. By the time you sit down, your coffee is dropped off. By the time you take your first sip of coffee, your breakfast is dropped off. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not far off. The people working are also very warm and like to acknowledge their patrons while also giving them their space. We raved about the waffles and they knew. They were confident about their product and they damn well should be.

The Conclusion: This is one of those hidden gems we'll be telling our friends about

I mean we honestly don't know what to say when it comes to these waffles. They are a Vancouver culinary bucket list item in our humble opinion. Go and eat them. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the benny served on waffles and will be going back to try it. When friends come to visit the city looking for restaurant options, this is now one of those "must go" places we'll recommend. We cannot wait to go back. Enjoy!
